Disregarding the rule of law at our perils

The actions of the government are yet again another topic of division amongst Haitians. As-is often the case in these debates, we have disregarded the impact of these acts on the rule of law and our country's judicial system. Lost in the fog is how this will push Haiti back in the Doing business index.

It seems to me that we need to have a different approach to the conversations that are taking place about Haiti. It saddens me to see people, who I assume love Haiti and are reasonable, engage in the conversation in such a way that both Haiti and the collectivity are lost.

No matter one's affiliation, I would assume that we would agree that we don't have the luxury of being so partisan at the detriment of Haiti.

No matter one's affiliation, I would assume that we don't support that criminal acts go uninvestigated and unpunished.

No matter one's affiliation, I would assume that we would want the rule of law to prevail.

No matter one's affiliation, I would assume that following the law is the minimum to expect from those (public officials) whom the people pay to make and uphold the law.

There is no greater injustice when our very leaders become the malefactor. This is akin to a parent abusing a child. There is simply no greater betrayal.

As we applaud the utter disregard for the rule of law because the administration has found a few boogey men, we do so at our perils and will suffer the consequences. As a country, we will slide further back into the darkness of the dark ages where anarchy reigns as king.

As we applaud the state's ability to take private property without due process, we will cry and denounce it when the next powerful person takes our land without due process; we will decry it when: EDH sends us an unreasonable invoice, DGI sends us unjustified tax bill, the internet companies make us pay for a service we did not receive, a family member is arrested without due process. We will decry it because there is no recourse.

Indeed, as we now applaud and rejoice that those boogeymen are getting their dues, we are also applauding our own demise as citizens and as a country.
